Another approach is to use a Canon digicam and CHDK firmware add-on. 
There are published scripts available that use motion detection to sense 
the leader strike and trigger the shutter..No mess, no fuss, just set 
the camera up,start the script and virtually every shot should have a 
lightning strike in it.
