The foolishness of tourists in the vicinity of high surf was pretty spectacular
yesterday when the waves were at their best. By Sunday afternoon, local
authorities had closed the road to Pemaquid Point back at New Harbor, some 3.5
miles away, because of all the people crowding the area to see the surf.

We didn't lose anyone locally, but I heard on the radio this morning that a
7-year-old girl died at Acadia National Park (at Thunder Hole) when she and a
bunch of people (double digits, I believe) were swept off the rocks by a
particularly large wave.

Mother Nature is farily unforgiving, and someone unconcerned about individual
souls, and she'll take 'em out in the blink of an eye. Yesterday as I was
leaving Pemaquid, a father and his two young sons came down on the rocks and
set up right were I'd seen a breaker reach not five minutes before. As I was
climbing up, another one got them wet and he had the good sense to move rather
than just laugh.
