Just to clarify on something because I know somebody is going to bring it
up.... But my favorite "wide-angle" is 35mm focal length, but that's
because it's my "wide-normal". As a "normal" lens, I find 50mm too long and
35mm just about right. 35mm is barely a wide-angle.

I went through the 28mm phase. I have a love/hate relationship with 28mm.
It's the widest lens (on FF35mm format) you can go without the picture
looking like a wide-angle shot. For that, it's a suburb lens. However, it's
too wide to be a normal lens, and not quite wide enough to be a wide-angle
lens. It's so close to the 35mm lens, but not as usable as the 35mm lens.
It's wide, but never wide enough.

The 24mm lens proved to be just what the doctor ordered. I am very
comfortable with the width. Of course, there are some occasions when 24mm
isn't wide enough. That's a given that you are always going to want
something just a bit wider. My oldest brother, a sports photographer,
turned me on to the 24mm lens almost 20 years ago and I've never gone back.
If you get too close to people, the 24mm focal length will definitely
distort faces, whereas the 28mm is right on the edge. But give it a touch of
working distance and 24mm is fine.

We've discussed on this list the relative merits of the 21mm lens over the
24mm lens. From what others have said, 21mm is just like 24mm only a touch
wider.

To put a huge caveat in here though, these descriptions of the optical
characteristics of these focal lengths assume full-frame 35mm. I have seen a
difference between wide-angle shots from crop-formats versus full-frame
formats. With my 14-54 on the E-1, I get the same ripping and spreading
characteristics at "normal" "midrange" focal lengths that occur with
wide-angle lenses on the OM system. Also, on a related note--I get far more
building lean with crop sensor'd cameras than I do with 35mm.
