I prefer a smallish to medium nib (not fine) which my burgundy 51 has. I
have yet to find a pen which for me is as balanced and demands neat writing.
I have another 51 which is more modern with a cheaper nib and there is a
marked difference in the feel IMO. Also a nice stainless steel Sheaffer (US)
with a short "gold" clip and a broader 14k nib.
I cannot comment on the market as I am not a collector. My experience is
with Peter Twydle at http://www.penmuseum.co.uk/
whereas a friend has recently used Derrick Purser

Both were trained by Arthur Twydle (dec'd) who seems to have been the pen
guru over here.
Interestingly Purser is located on a caravan camping site near Dumfries and
his clients combine their pen repairs with holidays at his site.

Yeah, the Vacs were long gone by '53. Last one was late '40s, as I recall.
The aeros were much better, and far less messy. Not a lot of difference
between US and UK versions, except the UK got a wider variety of nibs to
choose from. There was a time when I was trading in fountain pens that a UK
Parker 51 with a broad stub nib would bring large bucks. I don't know how
the market is now.
