Moose forgot to add his own tip which is to apply the LCE on a layer. 
Then you can apply the LCE in a fairly strong fashion but temper it if 
needed by adjusting the layer opacity.  The parameters given: Amount: 
20%, Radius: 50 pixels, Threshold: 0 is about as strong as you're likely 
to want.  Then varying the opacity will allow weakening the effect if 
desired.
