Matte paper is easy to use spottone on, ie, fix those little blemishes
of age, lens, dust etc.

People at home like glossy/shiny things, glossy paper is also
easier for the home user to clean/wipe and gives that crisp
digital look, it doesnt matter if the subject is so out of focus :o)

And as Jim said, matte paper gives the image a nice soft
look depending on the type of matte used.
