Thanks for the link.  The history of lens development is quite 
intriguing.

I like the translation of the patent:

" To all Whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hans Harting, director, a subject of the Emperor of 
Germany,
residing at Bruinswick, Duchy of Bruinswick, Empire of Germany, have 
invented certain new
and useful Improvements in Lenses, of which the following is a 
specification....

Also in the link:

Aside from its actual optical qualities, part of the Heliar's lore is 
related to Japanese Emperor Hirohito, who is claimed to have so admired 
the Heliar lens, that he would only allow his picture to be taken with 
a Heliar.
