It's to prevent the rather virulent bacteria possibly released into  
the body during dental treatment from taking up residence in a  
prosthesis. They can also lodge in the hearts of people who have  had  
rheumatic fever as a child and have scar tissue in there. When  
visiting the UK I discovered that they weren't doing it there  as  
there had been cases of anaphylactic reactions to the penicillin  
substitute - sounds daft to me. Without a previous history, I'd rather  
risk a very faint possibility of anaphylactic shock rather than an  
infected steel knee.
You take about 5 caps of Amoxycillin or similar one hour before - the  
timing is crucial apparently. I hate it because it gives me dire rear  
for a few days - and if the dentist decided no work was necessary,  
it's really annoying.
