Well, suggestions as to how I can find out what is doing sneaky downloads
onto my computer proved to be a mixed bag.
ZoneAlarm current version IS free, provided you sign up to purchasing other
products from other suppliers, which just happen to cost exactly the same
as Zone Alarm. So I looked around and found an older version from another
site. Unfortunately it did firewall only; not exactly what I need.
So I removed it from my system as much as I was able. I suspect there's still
evidence of it still around, as it seemed to place its files, during the
install
process, in lots of unsuspected places.
Wireshark from http://www.wireshark.org/
would probably do the job, but after I got over the shock of the download
size, I baulked at the installed size; 77MB, more than half my current free
space. So I didn't install.
Back to the drawing board ... ...
