I am pretty sure that this is due to the settings being used for the 1TB USB
disk. Do the following (this applies to Windows XP, but Vista/Win7 will be
similar):

(1) Plug in the USB disk and power it up. Wait for Windows to recognise it.

(2) Left click "Start", then "My Computer".

(3) Right click the icon for the USB disk, then left click "Properties".

(4) Left click "Hardware".

(5) Identify the USB disk amongst those listed, then left click it, followed
by "Properties".

(6) Left click "Policies".

(7) You now have a choice of "Optimize for quick removal" or "Optimize for
performance". Left click the former, then "OK", and "OK" again.

This should enable you to unplug the disk without having to use the "Safely
Remove Hardware" procedure, and without losing or corrupting any data. (If
you are left handed and have reversed the meanings of your mouse buttons,
reverse the left/right identifications specified above.)
