I saw a bolide once about 1969 while out in a farm field observing with
my telescope. I just happened to look up and saw a bright light
approaching from directly overhead and growing brighter and brighter for
the couple of seconds it was visible. Then it went off like a flash
bulb at very high altitude that illuminated everything like daylight for
as far as I could see. One of the most spectacular sights I've ever
seen. Not quite as good as a total solar eclipse or a shuttle launch
but still an amazing sight. A also saw another one many years later
that was running almost horizontally across the sky. Extremely bright
and then broke up into huge fragments.
