Brian, first of all, I have to comment on that playing technique--that's one
of the finest sounds I've ever heard and have always found it to be an
incredible experience to hear and see it in person. I've met only one
musician that had it mastered and the beauty of the sound was immense. I was
in charge of miking the guitar and was floored by the sound. We ended up
using two sets of mikes--one for the recording and the other for the sound
system.

As to the physics and so forth, well, the strings in this case are actually
not moving more than just a few mm, but that really is bokeh. What you are
seeing is the linear application of bokeh both in front of and behind the
plane of focus. You bring up a point which I hadn't thought of, and that is
with this picture the optical traits of the lens formed an effect on the
image which mimicks the effect of the guitar strings in motion. There is
implied motion in the photograph. I wish I had been able to capture the
string movement (and in other pictures I actually did to some extent), but
I'm not that good.

I've never in my life taken a photograph where the bokeh remained linear and
hard-edged forming the patterns seen here. This one is a fresh experience.
