I think that the idea is that the shaking prevents a deposit remaining for  
long enough to stick, as it were.  I should think that it would be a waste of 
time to shake a sensor that has had dust for a while.

As you suggest, Chuck, I'm no expert, but the words that you were using were 
discouraging to someone like me.  It's all about perceptions, isn't it?

But since you mention it, I have just submitted a photo to an image library; 
before I did, I checked the file at having increased it in size by some 200% 
and it seemed to be OK.
