Has your advisee looked at USB digital microscopes? I know little about
them, except that they exist and at least some consumer models aren't
that expensive. I was ogling some in a shop a while ago, but don't
remember details.

I found this on Amazon for $168, not the $299 in the video.
<http://www.amazon.com/Celestron-44340-Digital-Biological-Microscope/dp/B0014YNGCK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=industrial&qid=1277847210&sr=8-3>
The video is inconsistent, saying 2MP, but then saying 2048x1536 pixels,
which is 3MP. The manual says 1200x1600 = 2MP. The other trouble is,
they don't say what the field coverage is. Image size for 1x1 cm using
the G7 is 1500x1500.

With the LCD stated as eq. to a 10X eyepiece, the lowest magnification
would be 40x, so 1 cm. of the subject would be 40 cm on screen, I think?
The 4:3 LCD screen is 88mm, so it's ~53 x 70 mm, so the 1 cm.sq. subject
would fill it 80% vertically, and the same would be true of the images.

At 100x, a 5x5 mm subject would still fit vertically on the screen,
assuming I've figured this out correctly. :-)

Not pushing this thingie, but I was curious. Looks like there are a
number of other options from Celestron and others, but a shortage of
reviews. There are also USB cameras to simply replace the eyepiece of
regular microscopes.
