I see what you mean now.  Maybe it has something to do with giving the
sensor a moment to cool off?  I ran my E-3 sensor so hot one time in
LV that the camera sent up a message on the LCD saying it couldn't
take it anymore and shut itself off.

While it is correct that the shutter could work independently of the
mirror, perhaps it was too expensive to build it so that the shutter
would open with mirror in one configuration for normal shooting and
another for LV, because it appears that the shutter never opens until
the mirror is in its "normal" place.  You were thinking that shooting
in LV should be like MLU, no?

One thing that can be done is to use anti-shock (MLU) in LV if anyone
is worried about mirror slap.
