Depends on how serious you're going to be about using it.

Wacom dominates this market... and has the highest prices. They even have one 
with an integrated display, so you can see what you're doing, much like 
physical media -- but at an outrageous price.

You can get other tablets considerably cheaper, but the vendors come and go, 
and I wouldn't think of it as a long-term investment.

I use a ten-year-old 12"x12" Wacom. I'd still be using an older one, but the 
plugs changed from Apple Desktop Bus to USB. I suspect any off-brand tablet 
from ten years ago no longer has drivers available for the latest OS of your 
choice.

My biggest beef with Wacom is "pen churn." I bought specialty pointing devices 
with the big tablet, and if they still worked with newer tablets, I might buy a 
newer one, but Wacom seems to make their pens incompatible with each new 
version, so I quit upgrading. I told them this complaint, and they said they 
had to obsolete older pens in order to provide new features.
