Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the introduction to the limp home mode. Sounds like it could
help, in some cases. My last such episodes with my wife's favorite 89 Volvo
740 wagon were not pleasant. A mile from home, I turned a corner and the
engine quit. I looked at all of the usual suspects, and pushed it into a
parking lot. Even with a flashlight, I did not discover that the coil wire
had dropped off the distributor, hidden up near the firewall.
The next time the car would not start at all. It turned out to be a fuel
pump relay that is hidden in some obscure location. I can't really complain
about a 21-yr old car that only shows 65,000 miles since new! I have a local
Volvo shop that checks it out and services it once a year.
Since we are broaching OT subjects, how are the hoses on your Chrysler? My
youngest son had a heater hose spring a leak in Kansas heat about two weeks
ago, and it set me to thinking. I found that the hoses on the 89 Volvo and
my 94 S10 pickup were all original equipment, never changed. I paid a
significant amount last week to get the pickup hoses and a leaking intake
manifold gasket replaced. The Volvo remains to be done.
