The iPxxxx devices figure out what your current location is (long
story) and calculate the declination automatically. Otherwise, the GPS
does it automatically too.

Another app worth having is Topos2Go (free or paid versions). These
allow you to load up topography maps into the iPxxxx devices. This
way, you can use the iPad far away from a WiFi connection.

Speaking of such, the TPE app holds the google-earth image in memory.
So before you leave the house, just zoom and move around your area to
get an adequate coverage of map data in the buffer. Then while you are
driving around, just relocate the markers wherever you want and the
lines draw across the landscape. Drive to where the line crosses a
good vantage point and enjoy. While away from a WiFi connection you
cannot get fresh maps downloaded, but you are able to fully use what
is in memory. Doing it this way negates the need for a compass as you
can place the marker at your current location and you just look
closely at the google earth image to figure out where on your horizon
the lines go.
