When I bought the V-ED, the Minolta was on my short list. Turns out, I
believe I made the correct decision because the Minoltas have had far
more service issues than the Nikons which are built like bricks.

The LED light source of the Nikon, with the columnated light path
which enhances grain is somewhat an issue, but a quick pass through a
very light noise filtering takes care of that. No biggy. The scanner
is plenty sharp, fast and plays well with its own native software and
Viewscan.

No problem. It's not for everyone. That said, however, one of the
latest updates finally fixed an alignment issue I've fought forever.

Would I buy the Nikon again? Absolutely, but I'd make the sacrifice to
get the 5000 over the V-ED. Auto scanning an entire roll of film
would be nice...
