The give away on the Black Swallowtail is the thistle.  I don't think 
the Spicebush frequent those.  See side by side comparison--hope the 
link works.

They can be tough to differentiate--at least for me.

It is an atlas and not a field guide so doesn't point out the 
differences.


I think the Sate Fair are a cultivar.   Marnie considers them the  
Zuiko of zinnias--rarely disappoint.  We plant them every year.

Not sure how they were named though.

Monarchs like 'em too.  Great shots of the Black ST again--I am 
jealous.   :-)  Not easy to sneak up on them.
