Sure. And yet - it's avoidable. Exposure compensation is there for reasons, and 
bright red, orange and/or yellow flowers 
is one of them. ;-)

I've posted a couple of these before, but it's still true that such flowers in 
direct sun may be successfully captured, 
even in direct sun, without blown red channel, even with a small sensor, and 
thus lower DR, camera such as the G11.

I know I have shots of California poppies around ... They can be shot without 
blocked reds.
