I'd have never guessed a bomb transit plug.  I thought the wooden handle 
was a throwing handle for a grenade and that some other part of the 
grenade was missing.  I think you'll be much happier after you get you 
extension pieces made.

AG's suggestion for using vellum for diffusion was very good.  Sounds 
like it would work well and is inexpensive.
