Just thought again about my first answer, Scott.  Yes it is a hardware problem, 
and it might well be because there is too little RAM, but the reason for my 
bringing it up is:

Because they are slow machines, for whatever reason, I suffer with the multiple 
copies of programmes.  If I think that perhaps I haven't double-clicked 
properly and I do it again, I find out minutes later that the machine was being 
slow, that I now have 2 or 3 copies open and that my opening them has slowed 
the machine still further.

I refer to my earlier post about frustration with some parts of Winders. :-)
