By not worrying. I tend to take a spot and just shoot. Quite brazen. People who 
look like Santa aren't too threatening.  I get a few odd looks because I don't 
seem to be doing what the tourists do but I haven't been challenged in a long 
time. If I am, I flash my Nikon Photo Society pro card to prove I'm the real 
thing and tell them I'm just documenting street life. I do try and avoid 
shooting children directly - they don't interest me that much anyway (horrid, 
nasty, noisy little things). People involved in their own dramas make good 
shots but tend to be self-absorbed.
And I think that the E-P2 is fairly non-threatening as well though I haven't 
had any more problem shooting with a pro SLR - I think people then assume that 
you are serious.

Best street work I've seen this week was by a woman in Sydney who set out to 
explore her own city by shooting a suburb a week. Here's the blog that precedes
