Pardon the interruption...
60 Minutes story on Newton, IA - Fact or Fiction? Well, fact,
but...it does go to show that this is a news organisation that can't
be trusted. Maytag? Sold out to Whirlpool and all jobs were moved or
eliminated long before the recession started. Chevy dealer? Closed
prior to recession because of legal issues. Closed gas station? Old
dump closed several years ago.
Only one "green energy" company moved to Newton? Try three. No mention
of other companies that have moved in or added jobs. Elementary school
closing? Well, the other two recently expanded and are newer
facilities. The Pizza guy? No mention of additional competition.
Really, about the only thing they got right was the Chrysler
dealership closing because that one was one of the hundreds of
dealerships forced to close by the government takeover. There were
other howlers in there, but I'll stop there.
Of course, no mention of the race-track and all the related jobs
related to that operation.
Newton is definitely representative of the economy as a whole, but
this is a classic case of reporters reporting only the facts that back
up the story they want to tell. Shame on 60 Minutes for the hack-job
they did on this one.
