An old way to restore a thread is to use a high tensile bolt with a couple of
grooves cut neatly down through the threads as a home made tap. Use a fine
hacksaw and cut deep at the nose of the bolt and getting shallower towards the
head. This would act as a third tap as it will cut away that last small amount
of material without distorting or stretching the new thread. The same trick is
used to restore a bolt thread by grooving a nut.
