Dave,
the spec you provided for the lights does say 5V and you measured it at 5V
,this is a very safe bet you are ok!

Most flashes nowdays are positive with respect to camera ground/Frame. If you
are concerned about polarity check it with the voltmeter you used before:
Connect the negative (black) lead from the voltmeter to the outer ring portion
of the sync connector or the shoe outer flat connection, if using a hot shoe
adapter. Then see if the voltmeter shows positive when you connect to the
center sync connection.

Another cheap option, if you are still paranoid, is to just buy a cheap optical
remote trigger. These are often ~$10 and trigger from a small manual flash unit
in the hotshoe, but point it away from subject so the studio lights set the
exposure.

For people of a practical bent, there is a high voltage sync adapter circuit I
put on Mark Dapoz's website, that I have bulilt into a number of old hi-voltage
flashes. I got an email from somebody in antarctica recently, who was building
it into some of his gear! Although the circuit is aimed at high voltage use, it
should just be ok to trigger at a low voltage of 5V
