I agree with your comments about corrosion travelling along the wires, I have
found this problem with used items I have bought in the past.
The flash was stored with the hot shoe facing down and most of the crud seems
to have collected in the sliding cover.
The frustrating thing is that I am usually so careful about removing batteries
from equipment that is not in constant use!

I hope it works after you're done. Another problem often found with bad
battery leakage is that the plastic in the battery compartment crumbles
or cracks, the corrosion runs through the wires, through the on-off
switch and into the circuit.
