I don't think the photograph is good enough to say whether it melted or 
not.  I don't see any reason to disbelieve the explanation.  Probably 
simple mechanical failure from a bump or drop.  But the fact that it is 
broken on one side means that that side is more likely to experience 
another failure simply because it has been weakened.  I  wouldn't pay a 
lot for it without asking Olympus how much it would cost to repair if 
the broken side decided to give way completely.
