I couldn't see why this should be so.
Then, in a rather obscure part of the PHP for Dummies book, the author
noted that Apache etc were not necessary, but she didn't like that process
and would not discuss it further.
I then went back to the (difficult first time around) book I bought first and
checked it out and found they describe how to run PHP without a server.
However, heeding the advice from Khen Lim that I should use the program
that does it all for a user, I did download that program (quite a mission !!).
Now I am trying to find out how large the Apache program is. No place I
have seen says how large.
Secondly, all download sites I have investigated for the latest release 2.2.17
do not have ONE file for Apache, but seem to have about 30, so I am very
unsure if any /all of these are Apache, or what. Not even ONE of the files in
the recommended download mirrors has the name "Apache".
The obtuseness of the open source developers never ceases to amaze me.
It's as if they deliberately go out of their way to put stumbling blocks in the
way of novice would-be users. Little is neat and tidy (except their actual
programming, I presume). Naming is obscure to say the least.
