This reminds me that my neighbor, who makes collectible knives, makes 
beautiful blades and handle parts from Damascus steel.  I had never heard of 
its use for anything other than gun barrels.  In his work, the layers are 
very evident and apparently add to the value of the product.  So, though no 
longer valued for gun work, the old product keeps appearing in new forms. 
He also uses modern products, such as titanium, and all sorts of exotic 
woods and other handle materials.
