The inconsistency of English was indeed my point Martin!

But in this case I suspect the inconsistency is the verb "get", because as
well as "forgotten" I can recall "ill-gotten" and "misbegotten" as deriving
from related verbs.

I suspect Andrew would not accept "rotten" as a further example.

PS a reverse dictionary certainly helps my recall!

Piers:
Jan discovered Canadian English, which is neither American nor British, and
probably to the chagrin of both.  You also need to remember that English is
nothing, if not inconsistent. Just because the PP of "forget"
is "forgotten", doesn't mean that PP of "get" is "gotten".

Don't worry about it, Jan, I think Andrew's memory has failed him, for he
does not remember the past tense of forget. I think he must have 'forgot'
it.

Perhaps he wishes I would do the same?
