No need to check anybody, because the spelling Bob used is arguably correct,
and certainly not definitively wrong.
See MacBain's "An etymological dictionary of the Gaelic language" (1911) at
http://www.ceantar.org/Dicts/MB2/mb20.html for the following, generally
accepted as the origin of the modern English term:
Gille lad, servant, Irish giolla, Early Irish gilla; cf. English child,
Anglo-Saxon cild. Zimmer thinks it is borrowed from the Norse gildr, stout,
brawny, of full worth, English guild, Anglo-Saxon gild, payment (see geall),
gilda, fellow, used in the names of Norsemen converted to Christianity
instead of maol, slave. gille-fo-luinn, sea-grass (Wh.).

Famous term is "gillie". Queen Victoria is reputed to have had an affair
with one after Bertie's passing.

I'm surprised that Piers or Donald has not checked us on the proper spelling
as "ghillie" :-)
