home and although her body could be kept alive, she would cease to exist. My
hope is to find a way that she can live in what she considers her own home
until the very end.
Many senior housing facilities throw the old folks out when they are no
longer independent. The temporary roommate my mother had while she was
recovering was not allowed to go in her own home because she could not walk.
I was shocked to hear that she could not even go inside long enough to get
some of her belongings. She had to send her son in to get them while she
remained outside.
Currently (at the home my mother has lived in for 45 years) my mother has
two neighbors which she likes a lot and are very thoughtful and helpful. She
has two more neighbors which are younger than me and are also good
neighbors. She has one neighbor whom she complains about every time I see
her.
I think that part of the problem is that after my father died she feels very
isolated and frightened. She keeps waking up and looking out the windows at
night to be certain there are no bad people outside. Living among other old
people who have lots of time may not be a bad thing.

I've had a bit of experience with this with both parents. In your situation,
I would select the senior housing option. Although the thought of "assisted
living" makes my skin crawl, It worked out well for my father for the short
length of time before it was required to place him in a nursing home. I have
heard others speak well about their parents experiences with these places.
Many older people are more happy to spend their declining years in the
company of their peers, which is to say other grumpy, grouchy feeble minded
folks.
The last way I want to go is with a bunch of old people, which I am about
there.
