Hi, guys and gals -- my first post although I have been enjoying reading your
stuff for months.
I first posted my cloudy lens element problem to the Kiron Klub.
Apparently a cloudy lens in a 28-85 varifocal is rare. Mine was made in 1980.
It is the next-to rear element in the rear lens group. With the OM mount
removed, nothing more, the back half of the rear lens group unscrewed rather
easily, and elsewhere there was indication that someone else had carefully been
into this "for parts" lens properly described by the Ebay seller. When
unscrewed, the subject lens element fell out on my padded work table while the
coated rear element remained in place. I was surprised to find no coating on
the hazy element.
It is not a cemented doublet.
Being a chemist among other things, of course I tasted the lens by touching my
tongue to it. At first I thought this showed the haze to be only on the
surface, but later study in a grazing light with 25x magnification convinced me
that the haze is uniformly distributed throughout the glass. Cleaning the
surface had no effect.
I mounted the lens element about 4 cm from a new 9 watt UV-emitting "PL-1"
mercury lamp for 36 hours and could detect no change
