When I said "small airspace" I meant small in the context of the
wavelengths of visible light. Placing film in contact with a piece of
glass might make it appear to the eye that the film is in contact with
the glass. But at a microscopic level there are probably many hills and
valleys between the two surface that cause tiny air gaps that allow
formation of Newton rings. Filling the gaps with liquid or separating
the two surfaces by a large distance (relative to the wavelengths of
visible light) will eliminate the rings.
