Thanks.  The IP addresses all look good.  They're 192.168.x.1, 2 and 3 
for the router and the two machines.  The subnet masks are both 
255.255.255.0. The router is a wireless Motorola WR850G but the radio is 
disabled at the moment since both machines are presently wired for best 
security and performance.

I got an "access denied" message trying "ipconfig /release".  I suspect 
I need to issue that from a privileged account.  I'll log off and on 
again later with admin credentials.
