Yes, both ways. Pings from either end using the computer's names always
return the correct IP address from the router. Then the ping from
laptop to desktop fails and the ping from desktop to laptop succeeds. I
get exactly the same results using only the IP addresses.
Linux, of course, doesn't know the computer's names in the Windows
network so I have to ping by address. Once again I get exactly the same
results. Ping from laptop to desktop fails.
Also, whether from Linux or Windows and regardless of whether laptop or
desktop, pings to the router using it's address always succeed.
Desktop ----> Router (SUCCESS)
Desktop ----> Router ---------> Laptop (SUCCESS)
Laptop -----> Router (SUCCESS)
Laptop -----> Router ---------> Desktop (FAIL)
