I should have added:
When checking the battery contacts, use a flashlight to look at the one on the
bottom. If there are signs of corrosion,
but the top of the spring is clean, it's still possible that corrosion has
eaten away the wire to it. If so, it's a
fairly easy fix that a soldering adept person or any camera repair person
should be able to do.
