The designers of PhotoShop and digital cameras need to know that stuff.
The user of digital cameras and PhotoShop needs to know some of it but
hardly all of it. The question about integrating the light under the
streetlamp was bizarre. Use a light meter or the histogram on your camera.

I was reminded of an old joke about a college level physics exam where
the student was told he had a long string and a barometer and asked how
he would use these tools to determine the height of a tall building.
One student's response was: I would go to the basement and try to find
the building supervisor. I would tell him: "Dear Mr. Supervisor, here I
have a very fine barometer which I will give you if you will but tell me
the height of this building". :-)
