Thanks John, yes the batteries are new and fine; they are now in an OM4
which works well with them. There was NO battery test tone in the OMPC.

The cap and all components I could see looked clean, and I wiped them to
make sure. I tried the hearty slap on the back technique, from various
angles. No effect.

I have contacted the vendor and he will take it back. Yes, I "could" try and
fix
a sticky magnet, but honestly, I have more than enough to do without adding
the task of trying to fix something in uncharted territory; and I could fail -
and then I'd have no comeback. He says he will get me another camera or
money back.. Apparently he is selling off the stock of a photo school and the
camera "would have worked 8 months ago". maybe, maybe not.

I'm a little bit miffed; having cleaned the camera up somewhat, and read
Moose's commendations, I would have liked to try it. It is repacked awaiting
post or courier.
