Much of the US, and I suppose the industrialized world in general, seems to
have, as a corollary to the atmosphere of
unjustified fear created by many elements of our society, a lot of free
floating anxiety. Attaching it to something you
might be able to do something about is probably a compensatory mechanism
attempting to alleviate the anxiety by making
it at least potentially controllable. It's not a logical choice.
