I think you're trying to compare apples and oranges here but if you're 
happy and saving money to boot that's all that counts.  But I do think 
it unlikely that the pro was shooting at f/2.8 except in special 
circumstances.  Also, if she was shooting with a Sigma 24-70 she had no 
image stabilization.  I know some pros do shoot JPEG but I don't 
understand it.  Even if you don't intend to do custom raw conversion on 
every shot all you've got to do when you get home is do a batch 
conversion while you sleep.  If you've got a few bad exposures in there 
you have a fair chance of recovering them from the raw files.
