I do see a definite difference in the level of red between the two, the
second one being duller, or perhaps the term "less saturated" is better.

To do a similar test myself, I placed my Tokina 28-70mm on the E-500 and
took a photo at 70mm. Then I added the Vivitar 2X telemacro set at infinity
and took the same photo with the Tokina set at 35mm. I did not notice any
immediate differences in the colour levels or the edge sharpness.

One thing I did notice about the Vivitar telemacro is that the lens
elements are quite large in diameter, almost twice that of my Sigma and
Soligor 2X teleconverters. This could likely be the reason for the better
clarity.

I'm going to set up a more definitive test later, but the first thing I
need is a good colour chart or even better one of those lens test charts.
Next time I drop in at the local camera shop I'll see if I can obtain one.
I don't have a colour printer, so it's no point in downloading one. But, I
do have a small Munsell colour circle in my copy of Sidelinger's "Color
Manual" that I could use.
