With the exception of images made with exceptional care with an
exceptional lens on an exceptional tripod you are unlikely to find that
your film has any more detail than about 40 lines/mm or roughly 2,000
lines for the less than 24mm height of a mounted slide frame. That's
not so much a statement about Kodachrome as it is the limitations of
hand held photography. Most hand held photographs will likely turn out
to have even less resolution... more like 30 lines/mm or even 20.

If you have a 40 lines/mm slide and scan it at 4000 dpi you will likely
capture everything that can be captured. Your scanner's maximum
resolution of 5400 dpi will not likely be necessary. Pick out a few
slides that you think look very sharp and try scanning them at say
about; 3000, 4000 and the max 5400 dpi. If you can't tell the
difference between 5400 and 4000 or even between 4000 and 3000 then
there's no need to waste the scan time and file space for very large scans.
