The reason for scanning at maximum scanner resolution has to do with
grain aliasiing. With the Konica-Minolta 5400, I'd scan at 5400, apply
a touch of noise-reduction and even a softening blur (AA filter) and
then downsize 50%. The resulting images will be much smoother and more
"bendable" than if you scan at the lower resolution to begin with.
