Interesting you mention the BG1 as my memory was it was ok with NiCd/NMh?

The QA310 transistors are very small devices only capable of 1.6A max . The
NiCds have lower internal resistance than alkaline and deliver a lot more
current destroying the transistors.  I did replace them with larger devices in
a QA310 in one device, some years back and it then worked well with NiMh.
The simplest thing to do if you want to modify the QA310 is to add a small
resistance in series with the battery. This causes the cell voltage to drop
like an alkaline battery limiting current. Unfortunately, it is not easy to
take the QA case apart to get at the pcboard to modify it.

In my experience if you use re-chargeable (or probably other prohibited)
batteries, you will fry the internals.

Fatal error.   Unlike computer games, you can't re-run and come back to life.
