Ken,
Back when I was camping in the Adirondacks I used a black fly repellent
that contained some type of phthalate as its active ingredient (I don't
recall the brand name). Worked OK. Unlike mosquitoes, the black fly doesn't
bite through clothing so I simply wore long pants/ sleeves and a head net
over a hat. Repellent only needed for hands.
