I just discovered that LR3 has what it calls "survey" and "compare"
views. Survey attempts to display an arbitrary number of images for
smaller size comparison and compare does 2 images side-by-side. But
both use only a small amount of real estate and try as I might to give
them full screen instead of just the center area of the screen I could
not. Portions of the images can be magnified as with a loupe but that
was far from satisfactory for the grosser views. Perhaps there are some
tricks to be played but I didn't discover them.
The solution seems so simple (open a new and full-screen window just for
the comparison) but seems to have eluded them (or me).
