I use SI Pro II for virtually all web images that require downsampling, and
have done so for years. I also don't use its
built-in sharpening option for downsampling. I did a lot of comparison testing
of SI Pro II vs. various alternatives
with PS downsampling.

It's been too long to remember details, but I know I did comparison tests that
led me to use it without sharpening, then
sharpen at display size with Intellisharpen Pro II. For my eyes, at least, some
sharpening is needed for most images to
have a sense of sharpness that reflects the sharpness at full size in a
down-sampled image.

I have recently switched from Intellisharpen to FocusMagic for this final
sharpening task, based on how the results look
to me.

I agree that it would likely minimize differences. Basically, I think it's
impossible to display lens sharpness
differences in full frame images at web resolutions. Full, or at least half
size samples are required.

In the 900 pixel wide examples of FF images can do no more than hint at
possible differences, while at the same time
showing how similar the overall results are.
